A thought struck me. I was thinking about the fact that we know
someone will come to magic later in life, and we were thinking that
it could be one of the Dursleys.
I was also thinking about the fact that Lily and James lived in
Godric's Hollow, and therefore people have speculated that James
Potter may be a descendent of Godric Gryffindor. It is of course
possible that their house their was lent to them by someone such as
Dumbledore, but I digress...
What I was wondering was - perhaps it is Lily who is the descended
from Gryffindor. It is entirely possible - Lily's parents could have
been descended from a squib which appeared in the Gryffindor family
etc - and Lily is a throwback to the time when her family were
magical. In fact, couldn't all muggle born wizards/witches have
originally come from magical families, but are actually born from
squibs/descendents of squibs. Is this genetically possible? It
would explain why magical children suddenly appear in a long line of
non-magical ancestors.
Taking this further, with Lily - if she is the descendent of GG, and
not James Potter, and the reason that Voldemort wants to kill Harry
is because of some prophecy about his defeat at the hands of GG's
descendent, then that means that Dudley Dursley is also his
descendent and it might be him who is supposed to defeat Voldemort,
not Harry. Voldemort might only have known about the fact that Harry
was one of GG's descendents, assumed it was passed to him on James
Potter's side, and totally discounted Lily's family.
I'm only having a bit of fun here, but you have to admit - it is
possible.
