I do not believe that the House-elves have a 'natural predisposition' 
to subservience - they have a culturally-programmed one.  As I 
understand it, this is what Ebony and Pippin were both implying.

I think there is canon evidence that it is not natural or innate.  I 
am referring to the fear which comes over the kitchen elves when 
Hermione starts to challenge them, and with which they regard Dobby.  
This shows that they know that Hermione's and Dobby's way is a real 
possibility for them.  If it was all so natural, they would just 
laugh, and regard Dobby tolerantly as a freak of nature.  As it is 
the abyss has opened in front of them.  

She has them rattled and we can expect earthquakes in due course.
