Hi. Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I'm relatively new to
HP fandom. I have just been reading the very interesting article at the
Lexicon about whether Hermione was born in 1979 or 1980. I'm interested
because I needed to decide one way or another for a story I am writing
which I've just started posting to FictionAlley.net.
As a Brit, I have been in the education system over here all my life,
and ended up coming down on the side of 1979 because 1st of September
deadline has always been strictly observed over here as the cut off
point for when people change schools (in this case from primary age 7-
11 to secondary school age 11+). My own brother, whose birthday is 9th
September was almost 12 when he started secondary school and was,
therefore, the eldest in class. Another brother, whose birthday was
15th August was only just 11 when he started and was, thus, nearly the
youngest. Children don't miss out on a year as it normally kicks in
when the child starts school at either 4 or 5 and just carries on. As
to whether this would have made Hermione an 'older' or more 'mature'
student doesn't really come into things, as it very much depends on the
child.
I'm interested to know what other people's views might be on this.
Thanks
Frances
