I think he is afraid of the werewolf side of himself since he cannot 
control that part of himself--as he seems to control his emotions and 
actions as a human.  I also think he fears the fact that he could 
possibly hurt others without meaning it--he probably accidently did 
that before when he was young--and his werewolf side made him an 
outcast in the wizarding world.
