Also, not just the fact that he transforms into a werewolf and can't 
control his emotions, but the fact that the very fact that he is a 
werewolf has caused him so much trouble in his life.  If it weren't 
for the kindness of people such as Dumbledore, Lupin would be 
completely ostracised.  As it is, he leaves Hogwarts at the end of 
PoA, jobless, very much on his own - all down to the fact that other 
wizards can't handle what he is.  (Where did he go?)

Therefore, I think the moon could be a metaphor of a metaphor - as 
being a werewolf symbolises for Lupin his loneliness as a person, due 
to this monthly transformation.
