You can look at the Timeline at the Harry Potter
Lexicon for date information, or look in the books. I
know the presumption is 9 years - but it could be 8 or
10 just as easily...

The presumption is arrived at this way:
Canon fact: CoS takes place in 1992/1993, if you add
500 (the number of years Sir Nick is celebrating at
his Deathday) to 1492, the year listed on his cake as
when he died.
Canon fact: PS/SS takes place in 1991/1992 (one year
before CoS).
Canon fact: It was more than 7 years between when
Charlie played Seeker and when Gryffindor won the cup
as a third year (1994, as the cup was won in the
spring).
Canon fact: Percy is a 5th year in 1991, which means
that he started Hogwarts in 1987.
IF Charlie played Seeker in his 7th year, Charlie
would have been a 7th year in school year 1985-1986,
and would've finished Hogwarts more than a year before
Percy started.

Given the vagueries of birthdays, presuming everyone
started "on time", they would be somewhere between
eight and ten years apart. Nine is the reasonable
number.
