Not in the least, as I'm quite fond of both characters. They both
express part of the "half-and-half-ness" that I find so fascinating
about the series - half-DE, half good guy; half wizard, half monster.
(Along with other half-nesses about both of them.)

I certainly hope they weren't, as I've never read the Potions book
and I knew the answers to two out of three (and could have taken a
pretty good guess at the first one). The Bezoar and
monkshood/wolfsbane questions are based on real-world herb lore.

Closer to canon: Neville gets his toad after dropping out a window,
gets his [Remem]b[r]all from his grandmother, loses it while flying
(re-enacting the drop without the bounce), has it stolen by Draco,
and has it rescued (spectacularly) by Harry. Bangy slashy SHIPpy
stuff if ever I saw it, and reason enough for a male Neville to have
a male libido, no? ;)

For some reason, I read this as Crouch Sr. still time-slipping, and
mistaking Harry for James - I thought he meant "ally," "friend," or
even possibly "general".

From SS 17 (US (obviously) paperback edition):
"Your mother died to save you. If there is one thing Voldemort
cannot understand, it is love. He didn't realize that love as
powerful as you mother's for you leaves its own mark. Not a scar,
no visible sign . . ." Dumbledore then goes on to say "it is in your
very skin."
Unless Dumbedore is dissembling, which I tend to think he doesn't do,
the scar is indeed the mark of the Avada Kedavra that failed to kill
Harry, and not the sign of Lily's love, which is integrated into
Harry's self without a mark.
