Though the film is not canon text, strictly speaking, considering the
degree of JKR's involvement with it and how little canon text tells
us about the Grey Lady, I agree that the film is the only source for
inquiring minds who want to know more about this ghost.
But nothing about the Grey Lady's portrayal in the film support the
theory that she may be Voldemort's mother, IIRC. The Grey Lady's
costume is definitely not of the time period befitting a woman who
could have given birth to Tom Riddle, Jr. near the beginning of the
last century. And no, being killed while attending a costume ball
doesn't do it for me. :) Her numerous appearances in the film only
support the probability that this is a character who may have a more
pivotal role in the books to come than the one she's played so far;
since I find her intriguing, I hope she doesn't turn out to be a
cinematic prop on legs. :) Good of you to turn the spotlight on
her, Meghan. She cuts quite a romantic and tragic figure and I'll
have to keep a more vigilant eye out for her the next time I read the
books.
So how would the Grey Lady become more important? Now that the "Ways"
have parted, which camp will she hinder? which will she aid? If we
can figure out which time period her clothing belongs to, we might
have a shot at placing her in the history of WW and figure out who
she was without resorting to pure conjecture.
