Um, actually Vernon is married to the sister of an alumna... and
a sister who has such dislike for her sister and her sisters
world that I don't feel that we can be sure that Petunia Dursley
can be a valid source of information about Hogwarts.
Of course, if we posit that there IS tuition at Hogwarts, maybe
part of the anger and jealousy Petunia has is because the money
that paid for Lily's education mean that she (Petunia) had to
settle for less of an education than she desired... Trying to
estimate Petunia's age from her appearance is difficult, but
she's older than Lily and if enough older, the money needed to
pay for Hogwarts could have taken away from Petunia's "university
fund" or something like that... (Was Lily younger or older than
Petunia? I can't recall if that was even stated in the books and
I don't have my copies handy to check...)
