there canon to back it up? <g> <<<<
There's nothing to deny it, IMO. Perhaps Tom wasn't strong
enough at first to draw Ginny into the diary. He begins, as he
says, by exchanging messages, but he obviously had the power
by the time Harry got his hands on the diary. As Tom managed to
hoodwink everyone at Hogwarts during the first spate of attacks,
I'm sure he had plenty of memories that would soothe rather
arouse Ginny's suspicions.

during the CoS scene with any of Harry's 3 encounters with
Voldemort, I'm afraid the comparison just doesn't do anything for
me still.<<<<
But what about her struggles as Tom forced her to come to the
chamber? Why would you say "Tom wasn't present"? Surely he
was there in the most horrible immediate way, trying to take
possession of her soul. Tom says she struggled and cried and
became very boring...I'm sure that's just the way Voldemort
would have described Harry's efforts to resist the Imperius and
Cruciatus curses at the graveyard.
Penny pondered:

the sink just close up again I suppose? Did Ginny cause it to
close behind her and how was Tom guiding her? Was she
writing in the diary for instructions as she went along? Hmmm...

It is vague, isn't it? I assume that she had to have the diary with
her, but that Tom could get inside her head for brief periods,
sharing her soul, more or less the way he did with Quirrell, only
at intervals. She must have been down to the Chamber many
times before, since the Basilisk only comes when it is called.
She may not remember the other times, but it seems as if Tom
didn't wipe her memories this time, since she remembered him
coming out. He wouldn't have bothered if he meant her to die.
So far, Ginny and Harry are the only ones of their generation to
fight Voldemort. I don't go with the seed of evil theory for either
Harry or Ginny. OTOH, Harry's careful to keep his connections
with Voldemort secret, and I'm sure Ginny is also fearful of how
people would react to her if they knew. It would be awfully
comforting, IMO, to realize there was someone else you could
share this burden with. I don't know if Harry's ever told his friends
about Dumbledore's idea that Voldemort put something of
himself in him. I imagine not, as Hermione would blow it off and
Ron would be terrified.
