It does seem to work along those lines in HP, yes.  Under normal
circumstances, a rat and a stag would not voluntarily hang out with a
dog and a wolf, so the Marauders' human minds must've been overriding
their animal instincts.  (Makes me wonder about Lupin, though.  We
know he didn't retain any human intelligence until he started taking
the Wolfsbane potion, yet the wolf was willing to keep company with
three other animals which a normal wolf would either stay away from or
try to eat.  Are werewolf instincts different from regular wolf
instincts?  I suppose they must be, if werewolves are uncontrollably
driven to attack humans.  I seem to recall that normal wolves will
stay away from humans unless they're really starving.)
