The more I think of it, the more I suspect there might be a reason that we
don't know Ginny's real name, yet.
Meaning part of the reason for whole
Ford-Anglia-missing-the-sorting-hat-ceremony was to prevent Ron and Harry to
be present at the Sorting hat ceremony, so that we don't hear Ginny's real
name. If Ron and Harry had been present... they would have heard her real
name. This way JKR can include her name and any story that's behind it or
might derive from it at a later point of time. So, if her name is a give
away to a missing Weasley child or another plot point, we don't get any
spoilers in HP2.
Interestingly, at the end of GoF, Harry has heard the hat only two out of
four times. And in GoF, he learns something about the hat he didn't know
before (that it doesn't sing the same song again and again every year. ) I
can't shake the feeling, that in HP 5, 6 or 7 we'll learn something else
important about the sorting hat. (JKR hinted that we *would* learn more
about it) Something that would cause our dear Harry to be startled. Like:
"People usually *do* get sorted into the house of *one* of their parents",
"The sorting hat never changes its opinion"... ?
Any other controversial suggestions, anyone?
Barbara Jebenstreit,
who'd give a *lot* to know the Sorting hat's song of HP 5, 6 and 7. As well
as the rest, of course. :-)

Agreed. The Weasleys do seem to tend to give their children ordinary English
styled names. However, since the whole survival of the alphabet naming
theory depends on Percy and Ron being known by their middle names, why can't
the same argument be made for Ginny?
Of course, now we need a reason as to why the Weasleys would call Ginny by
her middle name. Hmm... I subscribe to the theory that the Weasley
granparents were killed along with David/Daisy while Molly was away giving
birth and Percy was hiding after breaking a rule. Therefore, I propose that
Ginny was named in honor of her grandmother. However, it was too painful for
Arthur and Molly to remember their dear lost parents and child every time
they say the name, so they eventually decided to call her by her middle name
(Virginia?), which was soon shorted to Ginny by her older brothers.
Now, what could Ginny's real first name be then?
