Aha!  Obvious foreshadowing of a revelation to come.  Maybe we'll get
to see that kitten after all.

Or maybe he has a bat familiar?  No, not because he's a vampire,
dammit!  Just 'cause it's a fittingly dark and creepy familiar for
Snape to have.  And a bat would make a good familiar, wouldn't it?  It
could deliver mail, just like an owl, and also keep your home free of
insects.
