But then he'd have to be an unregistered one, else Hermione would've
come across his name when she was looking up the list of this
century's registered animagi. There are already way too many
unregistered animagi running around, so I'm thinking we don't need
another one.

No, I'm sticking with my new theory -- Snape has a bat familiar. It
is not unknown for pet owners to share physical and personality
characteristics with their pets, and I'll bet it's even more common
with wizards and familiars. And c'mon, a bat would be *perfect* for
Severus. I can just see it: a smallish, graceful bat, with a furry
little face and ears that are huge even by bat standards. Her name
is Millarca (five points to your house if you get the reference).
She spends her days hanging from a ceiling beam in Snape's dungeon.
In the evening, when he relaxes in the rocking chair with his copy
of Most Potente Potions, she hangs from the candelabra over his head
and nibbles little bat treats from his fingers. And at night, if
it's not delivering mail for him, he lets her out to swoop around
school grounds.

Yep, I think I'm definitely a fan of B.E.L.A. L.U.G.O.S.I. Bat --
Ever Loyal And Loving, Understands Guidance, Obeys, Severus'
Instructions.
