IIRC, that's because Sirius used to have a companion star, a red giant , 
which has now collapsed. As you say, it isn't anymore. If anyone actually 
manages to *see* Sirius these days, throught the light pollution, it's almost 
blue, sparkling multicoloured (like a diamond in the sky, as the nursery 
rhyme has it).

I'm rather simplistic when it comes to these name things. Can't we just 
accept that Sirius Black = black dog, thus giving the alert reader the clue 
as to who the black dog Harry keeps seeing really is?
