I always thought he was remembering his friends, and how they felt about 
each other, but now that you point it out that doesn't entirely make sense.

Maybe he's worried -- afraid even? -- of Ron, just for a moment, and then 
his recklessness comes back. He seems to be a little hysterical, and I 
wouldn't be surprised if he was kind of crazy from all his years in Azkaban. 
A angry teenager might be able to throw him off his gaurd for a moment.
