I know that there has been a LOT of speculation lately as to whether
Draco has the potential for redemption. I, personally, am a Draco fan, so I
believe that he does indeed have that potential. Eileen, (and I mean this in
a nice way) I believe that you are wrong in the idea that Draco has "crossed
the crucial line" into the 'deep end'. Just thikn about this: Draco has been
raised to support Voldy, to hate Muggleborns, and to generally believe he is
above everyone else. While this attitude sucks, it's what has been ingrained
in his head since he was young. (ex. snooty 11 year old Draco in Madam
Malkins shop.)
Also, Lucius does NOT seem the type to say "well Draco, I know I was
raised wrong, but I'm going to try and fix life for you". Lucius really IS a
horrible person, and those beliefs ARE his own. However, Draco is mearly
trying to live up to his fathers standards. If i were Draco, I wouldn't want
to go against Lucius.
Another point concerning Draco's ability to reform is that when he first
met Harry, and then met him again on the train, he was (in his own way) nice
to him. Sure at the robe shop he was being a bit of a snob (okay, a snob),
but he talked to Harry right away. Also, on the train on their first day
going to Hogwarts, Draco again tries to ofer his hand in friendship. If Draco
was REALLY only on the dark side, he would have never offered to be friends
with Harry! After he learns it's Harry, he doesn't ignore him on the
pretenses that Harry was Voldy's downfall, and Dear old Dad is basically
Voldy's lap dog. Instead, he just wants a friend.
(I know this is long, but this is the last of it.) I also know that what
Draco said about Cedric at the end of GoF was a really, really horrible thing
to say. But, in Draco's defence, I'm more than certain that those were not
his words - they were Lucius'. And, sometimes people just say really stupid
things.
