I have a hard time figuring Dumbledore as an animagus too (mainly 
because I expect some sort of solid Canon evidence before accepting any 
notion).

However, IIRC, when Hermione looks up the animagi list she mention 
specificly that "in the last 100 years" there have only been 7(?) 
registered animagi. Dumbledore, for all we know, could have registered 
much before that: he IS 150 years old, remeber.
