Perhaps Draco believes, as Hagrid seems to, that the Potters 
might have been spared if they had been willing to go over to 
Voldemort's side.

 Draco isn't dense for not realizing that Voldemort had some 
special reason to want Harry  dead, since it's obviously a Great 
Big Secret, and Voldemort's usual procedure appears to be "kill 
the spare".
