I don't think that Harry was left and never "checked up" on through
out his time with the Dursleys. He was probably watched very closely
and for some reason that we don't know yet, it was better for him to
live the way he did. I think it made him a stronger person and his
background with the Dursley's will come in handy in a future book.
I think that some of his protection with the Dursley's comes from not
doing magic, perhaps because by him doing magic, the wizarding world
could detect where he lives or otherwise "give away" his location to
Voldermort. A comment was made a while back about how other wizard
children are able to fly broomsticks or perform spells to turn
stuffed animals into spiders without getting a notice from the MOM.
Why would the MOM jump all over Harry and not these other children?
By being raised at Hogwarts, Harry would be exposed exactly what
Dumbledore wants to keep him away from-fame and noteriety.
Now, for continuing education for wizards. I think many of us from
outside of England are thinking of ways in which we continue our
educations. I would have to assume that the wizards would continue
their educations much like other English students. Some entering the
work force, some going into trades, some going onto University, etc.
Since the educational system in England is much different than that
in the US, it is difficult for us to imagine what these students do
at the age of 18 when they are done with Hogwarts. What would a
muggle student do after they finish their basic schooling, what we
would consider high school, to become a teacher? Are there
Universities that have teaching programs? In the US a student would
graduate from High School and move on to a 4 year program at a
University (or college-which is basically the same thing as a
University here). They would then do an intership at a school, take
a mastery test (in most states) and then be qualified to teach. How
would they accomplish that in England?
