I thought I agreed with this then I checked the book and I'm not so sure -- Quirrell is probably one of the dead DEs. He says to Harry
"I met him [Voldemort] when I travelled around the world. A foolish young man I was then, full of ridiculous ideas about good and evil. Lord Voldemort showed me how wrong I was. . .Since then, I have served him faithfully. . ." (PS 211)

I could be wrong, but that sounds like he was converted into being a DE. He doesn't actually mention the dark mark or anything, but serving faithfully sounds like devotion rather than simply being a vessel or something. He may have been duped to begin with, but he sounds like a serious believer. The only problem with the idea of Quirrell as a DE is that Voldemort doesn't describe him as such in GoF. He describes him as a young, foolish, gullable wizard that was easy to bend to his will(567). I don't know if this qualifies or not -- it seems to depend on perspective.

summary of what Cindy's theory:
Quirrell isn't a DE, Crouch Jr. is listed as dead, leaving Snape to be the faithful servant.

Now, I don't know how seriously this was proposed, but I'm going to have to disagree. Skipping over the dead DEs for now, we have (1)the "one too cowardly to return" (Karkaroff since he sold out other DEs then fled rather than going back to Voldemort) (2) "One who I believe has left me for ever" If this isn't Snape I don't know who it could be. It certainly describes him. (3) "one, who remains my most faithful servant, and who has already re-entered my service" Crouch Jr. He's the only one actively working for Voldemort at the time so he qualifies that and of course Voldemort says "It is through his efforts that our young friend arrived tonight" -- since Crouch Jr. arranged for Harry to end up there it pretty much locks this position up for him. (quotes from GoF 565)

As for the three dead, I know we've got Rosier, probably Quirrell, and Number 3 which brings us back to the same old argument. I personally never thought about this until I read it today, but knowing how JKR tends to foreshadow things, it could be someone mentioned in a future book. It could also be an error on her part ::shrugs:: Everyone else is pegged it seems though.
