I am sure there is something big in the past.  There had to be 
something major to make Dumbledore trust him.  It wasn't just ratting 
on Volde, otherwise Dumbledore would have told Harry since Harry 
already knew that bit.  My theory is the secret task Snape has to 
perform has something to do with that previous trust-winning task, 
NOT going back as a turncoat.

No, he isn't a nice guy, but I find him extremely fascinating.  He is 
no card-board cut-out bad guy.
