I seem to be taking credit for everything today, but I
once worked out this elaborate theory (luckily for
HPlisters never posted) that Arabella was in fact a
warrior princess married to Snape, and part of the
reason Snape despised Harry so much was because, as
Arabella's job, he took Arabella away from Snape.
Being a modern career woman, and highly principled,
Arabella would not give up her assignment to simply
make Snape happy anyway.
A long distance relationship can wear on one's nerves.
Imagine how it affected Snape's! But then, I hit
upon a snag-in the Parting of the Ways, Dumbledore
sends Sirius to alert the "old" crowd, including
Arabella Figg (p 713, GoF, US edition). Snape's
standing right there, and we get no reaction? When,
of all people, Sirius is being sent to get his "wife"?
That's really odd. So I surmised that if Arabella is
going to be anyone's flame, then it's probably Sirius.
I really want Arabella to be young and feisty. We
alredy have McGonagall and Trelawney. Now we need a
Xena.

I'm definitely with you on the cabbage/polyjuice
potion connection.
