Funny, I pictured Karkaroff as older and ugly even he seems to be a
contemporary of Snape?  Maybe this is down to the fact he is head of
Dumstrang and, how English of me,) I just assume he is older and wiser (at
least until he showed is true colours).

I also think that as we tend to see things from Harry's poitn of view we
would not necesarily hear Snape talking to anyone on first name terms.
