I've always imagined Karkaroff as being in his mid-fifties or so --
about half-way between Snape and McGonagall.  Part of it is that he's
described as having white hair; that's usually (though not always) in
indicator of age.  And he is the Headmaster of a major wizarding
school -- a position of pretty high respect and authority.  I suppose
it's possible for a truly exceptional person to rise that high by his
mid-thirties, but Karkaroff doesn't strike me as a particularly
exceptional person.
