Neither do I. Whatever Peter used had to be shieldable, unlike AK, 
since he used it on himself (that's how I see it). The sequence would 
go like this: He shields himself, shouts all the talk about 
the "traiterous!Sirius", creates the explosion around him (maybe a 
real gas explosion, maybe a spell we don't know about yet), with a 
good "bang" and a good deal of dust. He's unscathed, but around him a 
dozen Muggles are dead. While the dust settles, he get's out a knife, 
cut's his finger, takes off his shirt, bloodies it and drops both to 
the ground. He changes into a rat and escapes through the suddenly 
revealed sewers in the midst of a throng of scared (normal) rats. 
Sirius closes on the hole to look for him and finds the clothes and 
finger. The pressure has built up for the hole day, and now the 
ironic situation hits him: he starts to laugh, hysterically, with 
Peter's ragged shirt in his hand. He is found by the MoM officials, 
and taken prisoner.

The theory needs probably a little bit of detailing, but that's the 
broad outline. Feel free to disagree.
