Voldemort on when someone dies to protect their family

In reading various posts on Harry's parents' deaths and Voldemort's 
graveyard comments on them, I wonder why Voldemort calls 
James 'courageous' for standing up to him while he calls 
Lily 'foolish' or 'silly' or crazy.  What is Voldemort's problem-- is 
he sexist?  Or is he so embarrassed that Lily got the better of him?
