It's my opinion that Voldemort knew how the protection worked at the time, 
but it was another one of those things he "forgot" until it was too late, 
just like the Phoenix tears in CoS.  He was temporarily blinded by his own 
ambition.  I think that's always been Voldemort's Achilles' Heel.
