Yup, it is a very long time! I think it is Snape's deep hatred which
was the only thing holding him back. He wanted Remus and Sirius to dig
themselves a deeper hole. Particularly Remus- he wanted him to
uncriminate himself and say he had been helping Black. The only reason
he revealed himself when he did was because it had become apparent to
him that Remus was not going to say anything of the sort :)
