I actually think that we can say with a fair degree of certainty that
they *were* in the same year.
All evidence from UK hardback edition of PoA:-
p. 259 Lupin gives us sufficient information to know that the
marauders were in the same year together. When discussing animagus
transformation he says "Finally, in our fifth year, they managed it".
IMO if they were in different years, Lupin would have said "finally
in *my* fifth year....
p.261 discussing Snape: "We were in the same year".
Thus whilst there is no passage which states that James was in the
same year as Snape, we do know that James was in the same year as
Lupin who was in the same year as Snape. IMO this is evidence that
they were in the same year together.

Who agrees that there must be something in the Snape/Lily
relationship.
