I was thinking about that today (post post) and realized the same 
thing. How *could* he have known what Harry's wand was made of? 
Sometimes I can be such a dunderhead!

about the MM--Cheryl again:

This makes total sense....kind of like the different Charms that were 
put on the PS/SS...that might explain it. 
Yet another question: How did Crouch Jr-as-Moody know how to operate 
it? That has probably been discussed before so no need to answer...

In GoF, (Ch. 36, "The Parting of the Ways") Dumbledore tells Madame 
Pomfrey, "This dog will be remaining with Harry for a while..." Which 
leads me to subscribe to the theory that it *was* intended for Sirius 
to hang out at Hogwarts. But later, after Fudge's reaction, he 
(Dumbledore) says, "...Fudge's attitude, though not unexpected, 
changes everything. Sirius, I need you to set off at once."
