I'm not sure that we can say that it's canon that a fire consumed the house. Blown up doesn't always mean a fire is involved - things can blow apart but without combustion enough to start a destructive fire. In book 1, Hagrid says the house was destroyed, 

Iirc, Petunia was the first person who said "blown up" and that was a reference to Lily and James, not the house, and she never saw either, anyway.
