Just a note: Wasn't it Cho of Ravenclaw who was
surrounded by her friends as Harry approached her to
ask her to the Yule Ball. And wasn't she sitting among
a group of friends when Harry noticed that she was the
only one not wearing a support Cedric Diggory badge? I
do see your point though and these are probably just
remote instances.

I also think Neville was put in Gryffindor somewhat
because Rowling needed a character for Harry to relate
to. Both of them lost their Parents in Voldemorts rage
and have a somewhat mysterious past.
