(snip elfundeb and Uncmark's discussion of Ginny being duped by
Riddle and his diary, though they eventually seem to agree she should
not be blamed for it--as did Dumbledore)

Ahem, first of all, Ms. ladjables (Ama, yes? I'm sorry I'm not
certain), no need for the grovelling at all. I was definitely over
the line on my calling out that it was my theory (MINE, I tell
you!). The polite thing would have been to say nothing, and I
apologize for being a jerk.
Now, onto my favorite pet topic of Ginny, the girl who will in fact
be at Harry's side, probably starting in Book VI (though it might
start to show up in Book V) through Book VII if he dies, and after
book VII married to him if he lives. Don't worry, the canon evidence
is coming, even if beautiful, wondrous Uncmark and elfundeb have
already provided so much of it already.
(Of course, I could just be prejudiced because I've recently written
a fanfic about this, but all the same...I think the ideas hold water)
My basic point of take-off for the H/G ship is in their common bond
in having encountered Riddle/Voldemort. I note that it is not at all
the same thing to encounter Riddle as it is to encounter V. Yet, I
say, the same person is certainly responsible for the worst portions
of each of their lives, and only they have come face-to-face with
dear old R/V and lived to tell the tale recently. (Just ask Cedric's
ghost about that one) I feel that their survival of these encounters
shows a similar kind of fundamental strength, and a root in
unbelievable stamina and kindness. I was only more convinced of this
when I was reminded by Uncmark that Ginny both attempted to throw
away the diary AND cough up the truth (under the duress of being
controlled by the Darkest wizard of them all). Her self-worth and
generosity only skyrocket for me in GoF when she refuses the dream
date with Harry (obvious that it's still the dream date because she
looks miserable, etc. when Harry brings up Cho and Ginny has to say
she's going with Neville). I understand those who want the Ginny,
Neville combo, but I feel that for Harry's and Ginny's mutual
benefit, their ship is best. Only they will REALLY be able to
comfort/soothe/understand each other when it comes to old Voldie.
Mind you, I DO NOT like the idea of Ginny-as-girlfriend-and-that's-
her-whole-identity. No, no, no, NO! We need to see more development
in her personally and character. I believe that OotP will do this
for her. She will truly come in to her own, and then in the next
book, we can try to get some Filibusters going between H and G. I
believe Rowling has said Ginny will play a bigger part in OotP, and I
think this foreshadows her culmination into a driving force in
Harry's life. Some think it's because Ginny is doomed in OotP. To
them I say...feh. I really don't think this is possible. Pit her
against Riddle, show her obvious strength and love...then kill her
off in Book V. Nope, not a satisfying story arc. Maybe she COULD
die in VII...maybe, but not now. Another thing, Cho will be around
one more year in OotP, and I think it's necessary to show Harry's
relinquishment of this crush (which probably is slightly hampered by
his involvement in her recent boyfriend's/love's/good
friend's/whatever's death) before he can move on the next year into
any sort of successful romantic relationship. I also think
Ron's/Hermione's inevitable hook-up is good in that it isolates Harry
even more in a story about Harry's isolation, his loneliness, his
solitude. Add it up, and Ginny and Harry are each other's comfort in
a cruel, Voldemort-terrified world. How this will effect the
chemistry between HRH is difficult to analyze, but I think Rowling
can do it with grace.
Onto something else for those sick of ships *coughElkinscough*, I was
pondering the merit of discussion in general on these boards.
Occasionally, it seems as though things only go in cycles (especially
after one and a half years--darn you and your need to have a
relationship with your new husband and your daughter, J.K. Rowling--
without new material). I wonder what people come back here for after
all this time (not that I've been here long by any means, but even in
this short time, it comes around and around--Snape is thus and such,
Sirius is this and that). I think one reason people keep coming back
is that they hope to have new insights pointed out (nice job, Elkins,
pointing out Avery's mysteriousness in GoF in terms of no physical
description and his possibility as fourth defendant in the Pensieve
scene). Another is to convince people of their own viewpoint (though
judyserenity's viewpoint of Sirius is enough to prove that is not
often possible--try as I and others might). I think that one of the
biggest ones actually is to be able to strut around after a pet
theory turns out to be true in a future book (if Avery turns out to
be a head villain in OotP or VI, we'll see at least a smile, if not
the hugest laugh in the history of Harry Potter discussion). I guess
I'm here to see if anyone believes in my own viewpoints and also to
see if people have viewpoints I can ascribe to (like LOLLIPOPS for
isntance, which I of course do now ascribe to in as "ewww"-free a
form as I can conceive of). What are other people really here for?
I recall someone asking about other Dark spells, and I immediately
thought of Morsmordre, but off the top of my head, that's it. Any
other examples people can think of?
I had more to say, but I think I'll leave it here for now. I'd just
like to announce my newly-unmoderated status *does strut similar to
one he will do when G/H ship is proved true* and say thanks to
everyone. It's been a very interesting couple of weeks of
discussion. Let's keep going.
