friends, I find in real life, is a common enough precursor to a
romanticrelationship.

so far.
Not the Trio-just the boys. Hermione breakfasts with Ginny and
confides in her about Krum. The only time she warns Ginny off
it's because they're discussing Sirius. That's understandable,
since it isn't Hermione's secret to tell. Ron doesn't care to have
his kid sister hanging around, and Ginny respects that. Good for
her. I admit Harry has shown zero romantic interest in Ginny so
far. But it took three and a half books for Ron to display a
romantic interest in Hermione. Is any one going to argue that he
doesn't have one?
I get the feeling people don't like H/G because it's too simple.
Harry notices one day that Ginny's not a sweet little kid any more
and boom! so where's the conflict? But I have a feeling that it
could end up more complicated than that. The Weasleys are
very aware of their pureblood status, and some of their
comments about Muggles are a bit condescending. It could be
Molly and Arthur aren't quite as open-minded as they think they
are. It's one thing to welcome a Muggleborn into your home and
quite another to have one join the family. What if Ron reveals his
affection for Hermione and his parents try to break it up? That
would create plenty of problems for both Ships, plus tie into the
theme of prejudice better than a romantic triangle.
I have a feeling that Harry and Ginny will end up facing danger
side by side at some point. Perhaps Ginny will save Harry's life
and pay back her debt. And if fighting a twelve -foot mountain troll
together is enough to forge a lasting friendship, among people
who rather despised each other a few moments before, then
facing Voldie ought to do the trick, don't you think?
