I had said:

went for bland jock James instead of brilliant, enigmatic Snape?...
and Laura Huntley replied

Sheesh, you can't get anyway with any hyperbole in this group. I feel
as if my artistic license has just been revoked!
I don't really mean that James was bland; just that he is a pretty
bland romantic choice compared to Snape. It's like the difference
between saying "Long-stemmed red roses are my favorite flower" and
saying "deadly nightshade is my favorite flower." Roses aren't bland
in any absolute sense (they have thorns and all), but they certainly
are a more ordinary choice.
Laura then warmed my heart by saying:
> Canon Sirius comes across as anything but charming

> there's just no delicate way to put this - he eats rats.... Did he

> make excuses later."
Laura, please, please go to the thread entitled "A Sirius Defense" (or
offense) and tell that to Penny!
Sadly, Laura also said:
> Anyway, I just don't know about Snape. Believe me, I am *all* about
> going for the bad-but-well-don't-you-just-WANT-him??!!-guy (I.e. the

Old?!?! First, Cindy (or someone -- I think it was Cindy) describes
Snape's classmate Avery as "middle-aged", and now Snape himself is
described as *old*. Most timelines put Snape as being born two years
before me, which is just perfect. ("Yes, perfect," Judy sighs, and
starts thinking about....)
Ooops, sorry, must've drifted off for a moment there. Anyway, I was
wondering how old you envisioned Snape as being? JKR says he's 35,
and I hope you don't think that 35 is old. Alan Rickman, who played
him in the movie, is 55, so perhaps that's where you got the idea that
Snape is old.
About his hair -- well, one could always suggest a bath for two in the
Prefect's tub. (Just make sure to keep Myrtle out somehow.)

Hah, hah, that's great! Actually, my husband of 8+ years is a saint.
He's been slaveing away like a house-elf, refinishing the floor while
I've been yacking on this forum. He's the nicest guy imaginable, and
definitely not sarcastic -- he's the strong and silent type. He even
knows all about my Snapecrush, and doesn't mind. (He figures it's
just a "woman thing", and that if I didn't have a crush on Snape, I'd
be doing something far worse, like drooling over a picture of Julio
Iglesias.) I told my DH (dear husband) that he belongs in Hufflepuff,
and I meant it in a *good* way. (Loyal, kind, hard-working, etc.)
