As soon as Harry finds out that Sirius was his father's friend, he
goes back to that photo album Hagrid gave him and looks at his
parents' wedding photos. Sure enough, there's Sirius, laughing,
"handsome," and full of life. The handsome part didn't seem to mean
much to Harry, but he was mystified by Sirius's demeanor: he didn't
*look* like a traitor or a murderer.

--Dicentra, who can't help thinking JKR put "handsome" in there for
her own benefit
