I think that Stan's speculation about Sirius was a direct link to
the Sirius/Peter confrontation. Look at it this way - everyone knows
Voldemort killed the Potters. Very soon after, Siruis chases Peter down,and
in front of many spectators, Peterbegins screaming about how Sirius betrayed
them. Obviously, people are going to say "Ah ha! Sirius betrayed he Potters,
so he MUST be working for Voldemort,who killed them!" Stan,like everyone else
in the wizarding world, would have heard of the
Potters' murders, and then what happened between Sirius and Peter, and would
have (like everyone else) assumed that Sirius was high up on Voldy's
heirarchy.
