That's easy - Hedwig!  I've always thought owls to be mysterious creatures, so imagine my delight to find them all over the pages of the Potter books! 
As for why - well, lots of reasons really.  All her affectionate nips, she can be moody as h*ll, and as loyal as Ron and Hermione are.  And finally, sometimes she visits Harry *just because* (remembering the bit in SS/PS where there's nothing to deliver but she comes for a visit anyway).  I siriusly hope Harry's future animagus form is that of an owl, so they can go frolicking into the moonlight together ;-)
