This depends heavily on what mythos the vampire
represents.  All of the ones that I know about in the
'real' world aren't affected by sunlight -if- they are
'awake' through dawn.  I have a feeling that this
particular bit of lore is best attributed to
Hollywood's re-writing of Stoker; anyone have a more
definitive source?
