Hmm, what am I doing here? I'm supposed to be Draco's
most strident opponent and say ignorance is no excuse
for his behaviour, a la Liz! By the way, thanks for
your comments Liz!

uncmark, I think your nephew's very clever. You
should listen to him, he knows how teenage boys think!
I remember reading this and thinking exactly along
the same lines. Well, I'm not a 13 year old boy, but
I did wonder for a minute if Draco had started to
notice Hermione as a girl first, and a mudblood
second.

You know, it actually isn't. Draco's prejudice
doesn't preclude normal, human, adolescent emotions.
Hormones, those hormones determine feelings for the
opposite/same sex! It's not rare for a prejudiced
teen to have a crush on someone from another
race/ethnicity/gender, because he simply can't help
the way he feels! But, on the flip side, realization
of such feelings may lead to a more virulent form of
prejudice, especially if the person experiences
self-loathing, and/or is even rejected by the object
of his affections. The suppression of anger and shame
in a prejudiced mind must be like a powder keg about
to go off. So while D/H isn't impossible, Hermione
could also find herself the victim of unrequited love!
Talk about putting a fatal spin on the Hermione/Draco
romance.

Erm, well, since redemption is about delivering from
evil and all that, who would make a better candidate
than Draco, ignorant child of aristocratic bigots? He
is, after all, still a child, and as far as I'm
concerned still teetering on the precipice overlooking
damnation. And even if you fall, you can cling on for
dear life. I'll try to dispense with the bad
metaphors. My point simply is that Draco is as
acceptable a subject for redemption as anyone who is
being led astray. As you've said, he's been spoon-fed
his parents' "values", but he may find himself in a
position one day where he realizes it isn't worth
leading a life full of hate. We'll just have to wait
and see what JKR does with him.
On Voldemort's wand:

Not necessarily, in fact you've given me an idea.
Perhaps no-one was holding the wand and the wand WAS
indeed hidden-magically. And maybe we keep thinking
of Voldemort as an ordinary wizard and not the
powerful Voldemort who has exceeded normal wizarding
limits. I mean, he's conquered death, he has even
preserved his 16 year old self in a diary. Who's to
say he couldn't find a way of hiding his wand if he
was incapacitated? I imagine a wand is destroyed or
disintegrates whenever a wizard or witch dies. But V
didn't die, and maybe his wand, his magical
fingerprint, carries some of his special powers.
Well, why not, his diary did! Ok, how about a more
mundane explanation? Upon V's disembodiment, Wormtail
activated a homing device so the wand would reveal
itself to V once he was resurrected in bodily form.
Ok, maybe not, but if asked JKR can always say normal
wand rules don't apply to V's wand, because it's V's
wand.
Ama, weaver of ridiculous theories. But remember!
Even a broken clock is right at least once or twice...
