I'd say he was quite afraid of what Hermione might do to him next.  
I'd put my money on Hermione without hesitation if she and Draco were 
to go at it.  Even Draco's father mentions her marks to Draco in CoS; 
she's got quite a reputation for being a clever witch already.

I can't understand why so many people speculate that Draco may be 
abused physically.  Where is the evidence of that?  Lucius is 
disappointed in his son's performance in his classes; very parental 
and caring, IMO.  Lucius and Narcissa are also very giving - Draco 
gets the best brooms to fly with and lots of sweets from home.  He is 
well protected by his parents.  I'm not saying his parents are great; 
Draco is spoiled and being taught quite well to hate, but that does 
not translate to me that his parents hit him.

As far as Draco's redemption goes, I believe the possibility is most 
definitely there, but I've said why many times.  I don't want to 
repeat myself too much.  :-)
