I speculate that no real reading of Draco's character is needed. He was in 
shock. How many of his fellow Slytherins have ever stood up to him? Has he 
ever been struck by a classmate before? By a *girl* before? I think it 
likely that he was simply shocked that a Gryffindor, a *girl* and a 
*mudblood* would dare to offer him the gross insult of a physical assault.
