Snape mentions Sirius's age (and thus implies his too, since they were in the same year) towards the end of PoA while he is pleading with Dumbledore to believe his side of the story:

"Sirius Black showed he was capable of murder at the age of
sixteen," he breathed. "You haven't forgotten that, Headmaster? You
haven't forgotten that he once tried to kill me?"

This is in the infirmary scene.

So yes, it's canon. :-)
