Yes, but there WAS a very good reason for Voldemert to do more than
simply AK Harry. He NEEDED a big impressive show in front of his
DE's. The first time that Voldemort tried to kill Harry, he not only
destroyed his own body, he also destroyed the illusion of
invincibility that he had so carefully acquired. A few DE's will
follow Voldemort no matter what (Barty Jr. comes to mind), but others
only follow him because they figure he's the "biggest bully on the
playground" and they'd rather be on the winning side (Pettigrew,
Malfoy, etc.) For the sake of those DE's, Voldemort needs to show
that he is truly "Greater and more terrible than he ever was."
Merely killing Harry will not solve the problem of his bruised
reputation; killing Harry as part of a big show for the DE's will.
This is the whole point of his carefully planned graveyard scene,
indeed of his year-long plan to capture Harry. Voldemort could have
used almost any wizard/witch for "blood of an enemy" but chose to use
Harry's blood so that he would then be capable of killing Harry.
Then, body restored, he summons the DE's so they can witness his
killing of Harry. Voldemort isn't "gloating" in the sense that he is
saying, "I've got you now, Harry. I'm going to kill you soon." No,
all his remarks are directed at the DE's, or are for their benefit.
"You know, of course, that they have called this boy my downfall?"
He then explains to them that Harry DIDN'T survive because he is
inherently stronger than Voldemort, but because of Lily's
sacrifice. "...but no matter, I can touch him now." Then, after
scolding the DE's for not searching for him, it is time to prove,
once and for all, that he is truly more powerful than Harry.
"And here he is...the boy you all believed had been my downfall..."
Voldemort moved slowly forward and turned to face Harry. He raised
his wand. "Crucio!"
All that he does from this point on, torturing Harry, teasing Harry,
giving him wand so they can play at some mockery of a wizard's duel,
is meant to show how much more powerful Voldemort is than Harry. In
this way, Voldemort plans to reestablish himself as the "biggest
bully on the playground."
