Maybe he's a chain smoker.  Not only would that account for the 
discolored teeth, but it would also explain why Snape is always in 
such a pissy mood.  See, Dumbledore has forbidden teachers to smoke 
around students, so the whole time Snape is teaching, he's jonesing 
for a cigarette. :-)
