Let me just say that I'm am buying the whole thing. Fudge as Supreme
Evil Death Eater. I love it!
I must admit I hadn't noticed how Fudge keeps that twisted smile just
a little too long. But Elkins' treatment of Lupin's twisted smile
has confused me. How do we know that Fudge doesn't just have Edge?
Dicentra again:

Protection, huh? You *bet* Fudge needed protection, big time.
Crouch Jr. *knows* that Fudge is a DE. Fudge is the worst kind of
DE, too -- one of those cowardly DEs who got off scot free. The
first thing Crouch Jr. is going to do when he gets over his
Veritaserum hangover is finger every secret DE there is, starting
with the Minister of Magic himself. Crouch Jr.'s failure to make a
clean escape left Fudge with no other choice -- he *has* to get rid
of Crouch Jr. before Crouch Jr. opens his big mouth. Thank goodness
there was a dementor handy.
Oh, that Crouch Jr. *really* has it in for Fudge, too. All those
times Fudge sauntered past Crouch Jr.'s cell in Azkaban, inspecting
the place, chatting up the dementors, doing *nothing* for the DEs
languishing there. All those times Fudge came to dinner at Crouch
Sr.'s house, hogging all of the appetizers, sucking down those yummy
jumbo shrimp, while Crouch Jr. sat under his invisibility cloak, his
stomach growling? All that time in the top box, Crouch Jr. flexing
his fingers, itching to leap on Fudge and shove a large pretzel hunk
down Fudge's throat. Oh, yeah. Fudge is *going down* if Crouch Jr.
can manage it, so Fudge wisely takes out Crouch Jr. first.
Not only that, Voldemort refers to Fudge in the graveyard. Fudge
didn't apparate to the graveyard when the Dark Mark burned on his
arm. Voldemort doesn't know Fudge is on the Hogwarts grounds and so
can't apparate to the graveyard. So Voldemort thinks that Fudge
is "too cowardly to return . . . he will pay." ::shiver::
Need more proof?

Check out GoF, "Veritaserium", when Harry arrives back on the
Hogwarts grounds. Fudge is right there. Expressing horror at
Cedric's death. Trying to pry Cedric's cold dead arm out of Harry's
hand. Telling Dumbledore to go speak with the Diggorys right away.
Why does Fudge do these strange things?
Because Fudge is E-V-I-L, that's why. If anyone ought to go speak to
the Diggorys, it ought to be Fudge. Amos Diggory *works* for Fudge,
for heaven's sake. Fudge is the Minister of Magic and is a
reasonable choice to comfort the Diggorys, which would leave
Dumbledore free to take care of one of his students, Harry. But no.
Fudge *wants* Dumbledore distracted so that Crouch Jr. can make off
with Harry. Fudge was in on the whole Voldemort re-birthing plot
from the get-go, you see. Fudge was just dying to apparate to the
graveyard when the Dark Mark burned on his arm, but he couldn't
because he had to stay on the Hogwarts grounds.
Hmmm. Now you've got me wondering where Fudge was while the DEs were
romping around under the Dark Mark at the QWC.

Sure, why not? I like the bit about Fudge tampering with the
evidence of Sirius' wand, with a slight modification. Fudge *and*
Avery tampered with Sirius' wand. This makes sense, as Fudge was the
first on the scene back then. Elkins and I already have an agreement
that Fudge pardoned Avery later, perhaps to encourage Avery to keep
quiet about Fudge's own role in the Sirius Frame-Up.
Dicentra again:

Oh, Fudge's fatherly manner isn't a problem at all. Voldemort
*needs* Harry for the re-birthing. And Fudge, like Pettigrew, isn't
going to tangle with Harry until he is sure that Voldemort is back.
Wow! So many Evil DEs lurking, waiting for a chance to kill Harry.
Pettigrew. Fudge. Bagman. Avery. Malfoy. I hope there aren't any
more.
