What basis is there on this theory? Yeah, I'd have
believed it until we got to the whole James & Petunia
part. Now there is where you lost me. How on God's
green Earth would James & Petunia date? If she's even
a little bit jealous of her sister's powers, what
would possess Petunia to go out with someone with
*the same, exact powers*?

That's funny, because I was with it all the way until
the "Snaaaaaape, I am your brother!" part. ^_^
I don't see Petunia as being jealous of Lily's powers.
I think she's jealous because those powers got Lily
tons of attention from their parents. Perhaps her
treatment of Harry and Dudley (taken in combination
with each other, not as separate issues) is a
reenactment of her parents' treatment of herself and
Lily. Or a type of revenge - "Ha ha ha, now that it's
my house, I can make Lily miserable." It would be
similar to the parallels Rowling set up with the Death
Eaters, anyway. My pet squooshy theory is that Petunia
has a soft spot for Harry somewhere, but can't escape
her childhood long enough to show it.
Back to the 'shipping, I think Petunia is afraid of magic,
which could make James attractive in a dangerous kind
of way. James is a nice guy, but mischievous and magical.
It could be just the right combo to make Petunia's toes
curl. At which point Lily steals his heart, and Petunia
pretends she doesn't care by marrying the most un-Potter
man in England: Vernon Dursley.
This doesn't really jive with my feelings on Lily/James
and Petunia/Vernon, but I suppose it could happen. There
are more unbelievable pairings.
