er ... do we want to explore why McGonagall turns into a cat then? Cats being
the insatiably curious, hedonsitic little beasts that they are? Maybe there's
more to her than meets the eye?

Definitely! Minerva McGonagall was, after all, rumoured to be Seeker for Gryffindor in her halcyon days at Hogwarts. (No canonical evidence for this but JKR would not have allowed in into the film unless it was true...)Someone who makes it as a Seeker is going to have cat-like cunning, guile, perhaps be slightly vain and also brave and fearless. She was probably a Prefect and Head Girl too.

While we do not hear much about Professor McGonagall's background, it is usually she and Professor Snape who appear to aid Dumbledore in emergencies and times of need, and, after all, dealing with wizard students day-in day-out you would need to be insatiably curious, cunning, and with the killer instinct just to survive.

(who only has five cats but has first-hand experience of their killer instinct i.e. another * stiff * lies in the passageway at home.............)
