But when Peter used the blasting spell on the street to fake his death, people *did* assume that Sirius hade killed him. In fact, they believed that the biggest piece left was his finger. Therefore, it must be possible to kill other wizards with the use of a spell other than AK, otherwise no one would have believed that Sirius had killed Peter. I assume that the reason Sirius survived was that Peter was sure to shield him from the spell, since if Sirius was dead - well, the framing wouldn't have worked quite so well...

Another thing that points toward there being other ways to kill using magic other than AK is the whole concept of dueling and "seconds". Ron says in SS that seconds were there in case the dueler died. Now, what's the fun of dueling with AK? Totally pointless, what's the use of having a formal duel at all? Also, its illegal. Yet dueling is not illegal, and people still sometimes die in them. Therefore, duelers must use other spells to wound, and perhaps kill, each other.

Not that your idea doesn't have its merits. I think wizards probably do have a certain measure of resiliency to physical, as well as magical, attacks -- when compared to the average muggle, that is.
